    Fortunately, nowadays more and more educators have come to such realization. On the one hand, English teachers should not just confine students into a receiver but a participant in the class time. They should be encouraged to raise their objections in terms of the teachers’ statement, try their best to come up with the solutions to their problems independently and have more discussion with their learning partners who may improve their thinking ability as well as learning methods. On the other hand, the English teachers should not only teach their students the English knowledge in the books, but also pay attention to find more suitable way of cultivating their English autonomous learning ability. For instance, English teachers can introduce some famous webs for the students to search for learning materials on their own. Only in this way can the students have better ability to set their English learning goal appropriately, make the plan of English learning properly and make most use of the English learning environment and so on.
    As Holec says, teaching the learner how to learn is enabling him to carry out various steps which make up the learning process(Holec 233). This statement means that the students should be taught to master this basic method to grasp their knowledge. The English autonomous ability not only helps students make more accomplishment at school, but also makes a good foundation for them to have a life-long English learning. Therefore, in the teaching practice, it is always a major issue for the educators to explore the related factors which make an influence on their English autonomous learning ability and how to develop the students’ English autonomous learning ability taking advantage of these factors.
    As we all know, middle school period is the key time for the students to learn basic English knowledge well and cultivate their English autonomous learning ability. But the subjects of the study on the English autonomous learning ability are mainly university students. At the same time, the study on the middle schools students is either not systematical or not scientific. In regard to this situation, the author should have more research on these students to make up for the imperfectness of the theories put forward in the past time.
         This paper will firstly define the autonomous learning ability and find the related factors which make an influence on English autonomous study. Then through this paper, the author would help the educators have clear and comprehensive realizations of present English autonomous learning ability of the middle school students and come to some conclusions to improve it. In this way, the students can be helped to have a better English autonomous learning ability so as to improve the efficiency of their English learning and make a good foundation for their lifelong English learning. In addition, the teachers can also be helped to improve their English teaching methods and teaching quality.
