ABSTRACT Professor Zhang Peiji is a distinguished translator and theorist in modern society. During the past fifty years, he has obtained prominent achievements. His series of Selected Modern Chinese Essays enjoy a high praise in this field. The essays he has chosen are full of true emotions and feelings. 46088
Those essays are mostly written in colloquial Chinese language with unique style by different authors. Since style is a part of the information of an article, so whether translators can reproduce the style of the original in the target text is an important aspect to access the quality of the translated edition. There are usually two methods to research the styles. The first method is subjective impression depending on one’s intuitive judgment but lacking scientific analysis. The second one is based on modern linguistic theories with little attention to the aesthetic value of the text. Stylistics, however, is a multidisciplinary approach which can combine the advantages of the two methods and come up with a convincing analysis of style from phonic, lexical and syntactic point. This scientific approach can help translator optimize style translation in different aspects in the target text.
For style translation, its core is to make profound understanding of the aesthetic value of the original and dig out the implicit meaning in it. This thesis would firstly introduce the recognizability and translatability of style. On this basis, translators should find out the “appropriateness” between two languages. However, there are many barriers in reproducing style between Chinese and English, so when translators meet such barriers, one can use the method of recasting and decoloring or generalizing. This paper focuses on the reproduction of the syntactic style in prose translation, aiming to analyze it from use of rhetorical devices and specific sentence patterns.

摘要张培基教授是我国当代著名的翻译及理论家。在投身译苑五十余载里,张教授成就突出,尤其是他的《英译中国现代散文选》系列丛书在国内享有高度赞誉,成为英译学习者的经典书目。他选译的散文篇章精简,情感真挚,娓娓道来。
中国当代散文多由白话文写成,而不同流派的作家风格也自成一家。由于风格也是信息的一部分,因此是否能够将原文风格在译文中再现成为翻译的一个重要评价指标。目前风格判定方法主要有主观印象法和语言学分析法。前者判定模糊,缺乏科学性,后者以语言学为基础,易失掉美学价值。文体学作为一种跨领域的综合性学科,能够取长补短,从语音,词汇和句法等多方面的分析判定风格。因此,在文体学的角度下分析原语风格,能够提醒译者在各个方面的做到风格翻译的最优化。
风格翻译,其核心是对原文风格的美学价值的深入透彻的解读,挖掘隐藏在汉字中的风格。在此基础上,从译语中找出与原语风格的“最佳适应性”或者“最佳对等”。本文将介绍风格标记理论证明风格可知性和可译性,从而找出原文和译文的适应性。英汉两种不同语言的风格翻译达到完全对应具有很大的局限性。在不能达到对应的情况下,译者需要掌握风格翻译的另两种主要方法,即重组和淡化。此论文从文体学视角研究散英译散文的句式风格再现,故从句式的修辞手法和句式结构两个角度选取例证来体现风格翻译的对应、重组和淡化。
