Some experts and scholars have studied the efficiency of English teaching in primary schools from different aspects. Chen Meihong proposed the strategies including creating relaxing English learning environment, designing effective classroom activities and strengthening classroom regulation and organization, which played an important role in improving the efficiency of English classroom teaching (59). Zhang Haiyan pointed out that the cultivation of students’ learning interests, the use of multimedia teaching and the establishment of a good relationship between teachers and their students are the important ways to improve the efficiency of English classroom teaching (151). Cheng Jianglan proposed primary schools English teaching is based on students’ learning psychology and learning characteristics in English classroom teaching activities design (23). However, these studies are not systematic and comprehensive enough.
The paper attempts to explore some effective strategies to improve the efficiency of primary school English classroom teaching. It is pided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the paper. The second chapter discusses the characteristics of pupils and their impacts on English learning. The third chapter analyzes the status quo of English classroom teaching in primary schools. The fourth chapter puts forward some effective strategies to improve the efficiency of primary school English classroom teaching. The last chapter is a conclusion of the whole paper.
II. Analysis of the Characteristics of Primary School Students
Characteristics of primary schools students have a great influence on their learning. English teachers must cultivate students in a right way and make their characteristics play a positive role in their English learning.
2.1 Liveliness
Liveliness is the nature of primary school students, which means that it is difficult for them to stay quiet in the classroom since their attention durability is poor. It requires that English teachers constantly remind them and try to use humor in the classroom to attract them. At the same time, liveliness is also the expression of students’ innovative, so that the primary school teachers should be in the right way to guide their students and turn the active aptitude into creative transformation. When the students put forward a good idea teachers should praise them and encourage them to implement their own ideas. In class, teachers can use some English games and English songs appropriately to attract students’ interests because children has a natural connection with games, introducing songs and games can also cater to their characteristics of the activeness and to stimulate interest in their English learning. After schools time is the student’s world, we should let them have the time to bathe the joy of childhood instead of using more homework to restrict them.
2.2 Plasticity
Plasticity is also one of the important characteristics of the primary school students. The influence of elementary schools teacher’s words and deeds will be far-reaching for their students, which demand the primary school English teachers more requirements in teaching modes, methods, and ideas in their English teaching classes. Primary school time is students’ initiation stage, during this period, students will form a fixed understanding of something, they will be using this understanding to judge other things, which requires primary school teachers more carefully to observe them and shape them with scientific and reasonable methods, so as to makes them grow up healthy and happily. Teachers also should try to carry out the teaching evaluation method in their daily class and praise the students who obtain the outstanding achievements and little punishment for the students who do not study hard, make students form the right concept that study hard will be praised and no effort will be punished so as to improve the students’ learning enthusiasm.
