    The Function of Songs and Ballads in English Teaching of Primary School

    Chapter One  Introduction

    1.1 Background

    Since primary school English textbooks in Jiangsu Province have had a great reform, the new ones pay more attention to training students’ interests in learning and students’ subjectivity compared with the old teaching textbooks. The new version of primary school English textbook has a song or a rhyme at the end of every unit. It usually helps students to summary the whole unit. However, it is not enough for the pupils’ English studying. Teachers should find more creative ways to help students learn the English.

    Students may hear about most traditional English songs in their daily life, and some of them can even sing with it. So, sometimes, these songs may have less attractive to them. It is really a difficult point for teachers to choose the right songs and ballads for English teaching. Catching up with the pace of the times is also very important for educators. They must know what is popular and useful for students to learn. A good educator must have a clear goal and a specific plan for teaching. Education is a combination of innovation and precipitation.

    1.2 Significance and Purpose

    With the advancement of language learning for young children, their cognitive levels are not high enough to catch up with what teachers are teaching. As a result, young students’ interests in English learning begin to fall, and they take less part in class activities. To improve the quality of teaching and the efficiency of learning and to make students master English easily in the class have become important problems which are needed to be solved by young primary school English teachers.

    First, introducing the songs and ballads into the teaching can not only improve the quality of the English classes, but also inspire teachers to change the traditional concepts and make full use of the children’s nature in teaching. Second, introducing the songs and ballads into the teaching can foster a student’s capacity, develop his or her intellectual, and enable students to gain knowledge. Third, it’s hard for children to focus on one thing for long time because of their characteristics. So, it’s necessary for teachers to find the right ways to turn the boring traditional teaching methods into the efficient, effective and innovative ones.
