    Abstract  With the rapid development of multimedia and modern English teaching, the multimodal teaching has become a must in modern English teaching. Therefore, it’s essential to develop students’ multiliteracies in an around way. Firstly, this thesis explains the definition of multimodality and multiliteracy. Then, it takes the reading part of Unit 2, the United Kingdom, in the New Senior English for China Student’s Book5 by People’s Education Publishing House for example. By introducing English teaching methods, it presents how to cultivate students’ multiliteracies in the process of pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. Thus, it comes to the conclusion that teachers can use multimodal methods, such as pictures, videos, music, games, etc, to cultivate students’ multiliteracies in English reading teaching at senior high schools.61209

    摘要随着多媒体和现代化英语教学的发展,多模态教学已经成为现代化英语教学的一种必然趋势。所以,全方位培养学生多模态识读能力至关重要。本文首先阐述了多模态和多模态识读能力的定义;然后,选取人教版高中英语必修五第二单元阅读部分the United Kingdom为例,以阅读教学模式为切入点,阐述如何在阅读前、阅读中和阅读后培养学生的多模态识读能力。最后得出结论:在高中英语阅读教学中,教师可以通过图片、视频、音乐、游戏等模态培养学生的多模态识读能力。

    1. Introduction 

        As we all know, the traditional English reading teaching only pays attention to language itself, while ignoring the non-text mode, which will inevitably develop into the  cramming method of teaching. What’s worse, students also tend to become passive learners, let alone to go up to cultivate interest in reading. However, due to the rapid development of information technology, most information is conveyed in printed documents, images and other multiplex modes. That is to say, discourse has not only been embodied in text modes, but also in the picture, voice, movie clips, layout, color, chart and other modes at the same time. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study the characteristics of multimodality and cultivate students’ multiliteracies especially at senior high schools. The multimodal discourse can use a variety of modes and symbol systems to enrich reading teaching content, teaching forms and teaching means to attract the attention of students, and to enable them to actively participate in class teaching and experience the fun of reading directly, so as to stimulate student’s interest in the reading. What’s more, nowadays, network teaching plays a more important role in education, which means that educators should make full use of the computer technology as well as Internet resources to build a multi-channel, all-dimensional and interactive knowledge dissemination system and information procession system. With the help of multimedia and computer technology, the teaching of English reading takes a great advantage at senior high schools since pictures or movie clips are always better eye-catchers than written words in textbooks. Furthermore, teachers can upload a large number of English teaching materials and teaching assistant materials to the Internet which students can at any time download to improve learning skills and broad their horizon.
