Title Translator’s Subjectivity in the Subtitle Translation of Dream of the Red Chambers
Abstract
The paper aims at conducting a study on the translator’s subjectivity embodied in the subtitles’ translation of Dream of the Red Chambers. On the basis of two complete English versions accomplished by David Hawkes with John Minford and Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang, together with the selective translation version by H. Bencraft Joly, this paper attempts to study the concrete manifestations of translator’s subjectivity in the subtitles’ translation of Dream of the Red Chambers. Through the comparative analysis, the author properly concludes that some translation is centered on the source text while some is full of translator’s creativity, making full use of target language’s features or translator’s own understanding and interpretation. The author regards all these as the manifestations of translator’s subjectivity.

1 Introduction
The paper is to conduct a study on the translator’s subjectivity embodied in the subtitles’ translation of Dream of the Red Chambers. There are several English translation editions for it. The first complete English version was finished by David Hawkes and John Minford. David Hawkes was one of the most famous translators who bended himself to studying Chinese culture, and the translation work The Story of the Stone is regarded as an extraordinary achievement for him which plays an important role in western world. Dream of the Red Chambers translated by Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang, another complete English version, is another influential version, which was published in China rather than in English-speaking countries. They finished translating this piece of masterwork in 1974. H. Bencraft Joly was Vice-Consulate of Macao when he translated Dream of the Red Chambers in an effort to advance appreciation of Chinese literature among western scholars. His version also exerts outstanding impact, as one of the best selective translation versions. On the basis of these three versions, this paper is going to study the manifestation of translators’ subjectivity in translation practice of Dream of the Red Chambers’s subtitles.
