    摘 要现在很多教师把大部分的精力集中在词汇和语法的教学上,忽视或轻视文化背景知识对中学英语阅读教学的重要作用。本论文首先介绍了语言和文化的关系以及文化背景知识在中学英语阅读教学中的重要作用,并详细地介绍了文化背景知识的引入对词汇、语句和语篇的重要意义,然后讨论了现在中学英语阅读教学中出现的主要问题,并提出了相应的解决方法,例如,扩大学生的阅读视野,注意汉语和英语的差异等。最后对文化背景知识在中学英语阅读教学中的应用策略进行了深入探讨。本研究有助于提高中学英语的阅读教学,从而进一步提高教育质量。28549

    Abstract  Now many teachers emphasize too much on vocabulary or grammar knowledge, neglecting the important role of the cultural background knowledge in English reading teaching in middle school. This paper firstly introduces the relationship between language and culture. Meanwhile, the important role of the cultural background knowledge in English reading teaching in middle school is analyzed. And the important meaning of introducing cultural background knowledge to the vocabulary, the sentence and the discourse is presented in detail, respectively. And then the problems and the problem-solving ways in English reading teaching in middle school are put forward in this paper. The strategies mainly include broadening students’ reading out of class etc. Finally, the applications strategies of the cultural background knowledge in English reading teaching in middle school are discussed deeply. This paper can improve the English reading teaching in middle school, and it is also helpful for improving the quality of education.

    I. Introduction
    As we all know, Language can not exist away from culture. There is a close relationship between language and culture. Culture is an integrated system of learned behavior patterns that characteristics of members of any given society and it reflects to the total way of life of particular group of people (Zhang126). It includes everything that a group of people thinks and makes. Language is a mirror that can reflect culture. On the contrary, culture has effect on language. Learning a language is inseparable from learning its culture, although we use the actual language when we communicate with each other. However, the same statements may represent different meanings for different people. Barrey Tomalin thought that language is the carrier for culture. Each nation has its own particular customs and cultural background (1963). People always understand the things written by others using their own inherent way according to their own cultural background. Thus, it is difficult for us to understand the real meaning of the article when we are unfamiliar with the cultural background knowledge of British and American countries. It is an important way for people to absorb information and knowledge, especially for the junior school students.
