Adaptation Theory origins from Darwin’s Evolutionary epistemology; This theory was put forward by Verschueren, a Belgium linguist, after publishing a book named Understanding Pragmatics in 1999 and in this book, the author specifically introduce pragmatic adaptation theory for the first time; thus opening a new perspective of translation researching. Verschueren believes that Language use can be defined as the continuous making of linguistic choices (Verschueren, 1999); and there are at least three, hierarchically related key notions needed to understand the process of ‘making choices’ as the base-line description of language use. They are variability, negotiability and adaptability. What is more, the notion of adaptability will enable us to assign four clear tasks to pragmatic descriptions and explanations. These four ‘tasks’ or ‘angles of investigation’, which do not constitute separable topics of investigation but which should be seen as focal points in one coherent pragmatic approach to language use, are the following: Contextual correlates of adaptability, Structural objects of adaptability, Dynamics of adaptability and Salience of the adaptation processes.
This paper carries out the research through field survey so as to collect related language data in Xuzhou city and then do comparison with other data collected from other regions. Then the Adaptation Theory is applied into analysis. Meanwhile, this paper also suggests several translating strategies. Firstly, translators are supposed to get deep understanding of sources language through filed working or background research; secondly, translators are expected to apply trans-positional thinking imaging themselves as readers when they are doing translation. This will enable translator to make better linguistic choices.
