        Skopostheorie offers an answer, which regards translation as purposeful action. Since Skopostheorie was proposed by Hans J. Vermeer in Germany in 1978, it has  been widely applied to various fields of translation, and has achieved good results in translation. And the final purpose of subtitle translation is to effectively convey relative information of film to the the audience with a different culture background and to have them get a better understanding and appreciation, surely, within the limit of space and time. So with aims of providing a model for the application of Skopostheorie to subtitle translation and improving the quality of subtitle translation, this paper takes The shawshank Redemption as an example and analyzes its subtitle translation strategy from the perspective of Skopostheorie.
        The Shawshank Redemption, known as one of the most powerful Hollywood films, wins good reputation not only in America but also in China. According to the newest data on IMDB, the film won 975,324 votes and was elected as the best film among the Top 250 films. It is indeed a good film telling a story about finding hope in despair, which may enlighten and inspire people a lot. But the success it hit in China and other countries is not just because of its plot. There is no denying that its perfect subtitle translation also plays a significant role in this success.
