1.2 The Significance of the Research
Whether the blackboard writing is good or bad can directly affects the teaching effect. Psychological research shows that 85% of the information the brain can memory is from vision (Chen, D.T., Wong, A. F. L., & Hsu, J. J.F., 2003). The blackboard is the simplest and the most important visual information source in the classroom. And the blackboard writing is helpful to the completion of the teaching goal, the solution of the teaching difficulties and it can improve the students' English writing skills, etc. So it’s important to study more about the blackboard writing.
1.3 The Research Questions
Through observing and analyzing the videos of experienced teacher’s class and teacher’s class, I want to work out the following two questions: First, what’s the current situation of board writing in elementary English class in the era of multimedia instruction? Second, what are the problems in using board writing in elementary English class?
1.4 The Structure of the Thesis
I pide my thesis into 8 parts. The first part is the introduction of the thesis. In this part, I will tell the background, the significance, the research questions and the structure of the thesis. The second part is the literature review. There I summarize many previous workers’ views to support my research. The third part is about theories. Because the theory about the discipline of the board writing has not been shaped yet, I consult many pedagogical theories to support this research. And in the fourth part, I describe my research design in detail. The fifth part is my finding of the research. There I observe the videos and record the data, then through observing and comparing the data, I got some information about the current situation of the board writing in elementary English class. And through analyzing the blackboard layout, I concluded the problems of using board writing. Based on the problems found in part 5, I make a discussion in part 6 and give some suggestions. The seventh part is my reflection about the research. And I put references in the last part.
2. Literature Review
2.1 The Definition of Board Writing
The definition of blackboard writing varies from person to person. Blackboard writing is the knowledge network teachers analyze and integrate according to time, space and logical sequence displayed on the blackboard (Yu Juan, 2010). It is written language teachers use to express themselves and instruct students according to the needs of teaching (Li Wei, 2007). Blackboard writing also refers to the written language teachers use to summarize and reflect the teaching content (Wang Lichun, 2013). Understood from dynamic angle, blackboard writing is a teaching method based on the actual needs of teaching, which adopts text, symbols, pictures and charts to convey information. And understood from the static angle, blackboard writing refers to all the information teachers convey to students to help them understand and master the knowledge with blackboard. It is a science, which requires accurate language and complete content to correctly express teachers’ intention. It is an art, which requires reasonable composition, beautiful words and vivid forms to give people enjoyment.
2.2 Forms of Board Writing
Based on Wang Songquan’s research, blackboard writing can be pided into many types from four aspects. According to the functions of blackboard writing, blackboard writing can be pided into basic blackboard writing and auxiliary blackboard writing (Wang Lichun, 2013), also called major blackboard writing and minor blackboard writing. According to the content of blackboard writing, it can be pided into six types, e.g. the words and structures blackboard writing, the knowledge and practice blackboard writing. According to the forms, blackboard writing can be pided into ten types, including the list and blank-filling blackboard writing and the symbol and image blackboard writing, etc. And according to the way of presentation, blackboard writing can be pided into ten types, e.g. the single color and multi-color blackboard writing, the quotation and summary blackboard writing. As to choose the type of blackboard writing, teachers should take the teaching content, teaching aim, class type and students’ needs into consideration.
