    On the Menu Translation of Hangzhou Cuisine in the Perspective of Functionalism Abstract Besides the famous places of interest in Hangzhou that overseas travelers hope to visit, the special Hangzhou Cuisine is also an attraction that foreign visitors are eager to taste. However, there are very few restaurants in Hangzhou that have English menus, which would cause inconvenience for foreigners. Thus, there is a practical need for an appropriate English version of Hangzhou Cuisine names in many of the city’s restaurants.

    Due to the special features of Hangzhou Cuisine names, it is not an easy task to translate them into both accurate and elegant English. At present, there are problems existent in many English versions of Hangzhou Cuisine names such as inappropriate words, spelling mistakes and the ignorance of cultural differences. Adopting functionalist theory as guidance and collecting data from representative and authorized sources such as Hangzhou Cuisine Museum, the book Hangzhou Cuisine in Four Languages, the author attempts to find out the specific functions of menus and figure out what kind of elements should be taken into consideration when translating Hangzhou Cuisine names. On the basis of these analysis above, the author not only tries to discuss which English version of Hangzhou Cuisine name is the most proper among various English translations, but also hopes to put the theory into the practice of appreciating excellent English translations of Hangzhou Cuisine names. At the end of the paper, the author puts forward systematic methods and principles in the hope to contribute to the standardization and improvement of English Hangzhou Cuisine menus. 48262

    从功能翻译理论角度看杭帮菜的菜单翻译

    摘 要杭州以其悠久的历史和深厚的文化底蕴吸引了无数的外国游客。除了名胜古迹和自然风光,杭帮菜也是杭州旅游业的重要组成部分。然而,大部分的杭帮菜餐馆并没有英文菜单,这给外国游客的点菜和品尝带来了诸多不便。因此,为杭帮菜餐馆提供一份简洁明了且具有吸引力的英文菜单,具有现实意义。

    由于杭帮菜菜名的诸多特点,要准确地翻译其菜名并使菜单发挥其“招揽顾客”的功能,具有一定的挑战性。纵观当前存在的不同杭帮菜英译版本,作者发现其中不乏一些问题,例如用词不当,拼写错误和文化差异意识的缺失等。本文以功能翻译理论为指导,以杭帮菜博物馆、《杭州名菜四语宝典》以及杭州旅游外宣网站等提供的英译版本为数据,探讨菜单的文本类型和功能,并提出英文菜单翻译所要达到的基本标准,进而分析和对比不同杭帮菜的英译版本。最后,本文将提出系统的杭帮菜菜单翻译的原则和方法,为杭帮菜英文菜单的标准化和准确性的提高尽一份微薄之力。
