1 The introduction of Chinese local snacks
With the economic globalization and international communication nowadays, our Chinese culture has a more and more important effect on the western and even the world’s culture. What’s more, the exchange of the cooking culture which is closely related to the daily life is increasingly prominent. Our cooking culture has a long history and a high reputation in the world. The successful host of Beijing Olympic and Shanghai World Expo helps to develop our tourism and attracts the foreign visitors in succession. While they are enjoying the beautiful landscape, they are attracted by our delicious food. Tasting the special Chinese food becomes one of the essential parts in foreign visitors’ traveling schedule.
China is a country with a vast territory, as a result, the different natural environment, living habits, economic and cultural development in different areas form the different snacks, which are handed down from the ancient times, or made by the modern people. Anyway, in the process of Chinese development in the history of thousands of years, the local snacks are emerging in endless stream, including the high quality materials, fine making, great varieties, and different flavors, some of which even contain moving stories and allusions. So the snacks have gained a great favor from the international diners.
2 The relevant culture of Chinese local snacks
Chinese food is different in different areas, which have high quality materials, with strong regional culture characteristics. And the practicability and artistry of their names manifest the history of Chinese dietetic culture, reflecting the Chinese custom, modes of thinking and views of value.
What contains in the Chinese local snacks is the Chinese special cultural connotation, which means that a snack name will wake up the relevant dietetic and folk culture in our hearts, such as the traditional snack Zongzi. When we look at word Zongzi, we will think about associated cultural information, the Dragon Boat Festival on lunar May 5, the dragon boat race, the folk culture in memory of QuYuan, and so on. Therefore, we should consider of diffusion of the folk culture and the exchange of the dietetic culture when translating the snacks. On the other hand, the naming of most of the snacks has mirrored the outstanding characteristic of Hanyu, such as Niangao. It is the snack that people in every area of China will eat in the Spring Festival. It means not only the pastry eaten in festival, but also the steadily high in the next year. There are much more with the similar feature, such as Yuanxiao(sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour, which is for the Lantern Festival), Yuebing(moon cake), and so on. Such kinds of names embody the specialties and advantages of Hanyu.
Hence, the English names of Chinese local snacks should bear three levels of cultural communication: the spread of the folk culture, the exchange of the dietetic culture and the promotion of the Pinyin culture of Hanyu. Zhang Guoliang(2011) says, on one hand, the exchange and promotion of the Hanyu set up the bridge in spreading the folk and dietetic culture; on the other hand, what Chinese culture attracts the foreigners most is the daily beautiful scene, the folk and dietetic culture contains in which will in the meantime promote the Pinyin culture of Hanyu.
